Mr. Varadkar won the vote by 57 votes to 50, with 47 abstaining.

As well as becoming Ireland’s first gay PM, Varadkar, will be also the first from an ethnic minority background. His position will be confirmed later this month, when parliament resumes after a break.

Mr, Leo Varadkar, the son of an Indian immigrant, will also be the youngest-ever person to hold the office of PM after succeeding Enda Kenny.

Speaking in parliament, Varadkar said: “I’ve been elected to lead but I promise to serve.”/.
