The ceremony, hosted by US Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon at the US State Department’s Treaty Room, was attended by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

“Montenegro’s accession sends a signal to other states that seek membership, that if a country truly reforms, if it promotes democracy, strengthens the rule of law, modernises its armed forces and contributes to our collective defence, it too can join the alliance,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Stoltenberg also called Montenegro's accession "good for the stability of the western Balkans. And it's good for international peace and security."

Montenegro Prime Minister Dusko Markovic cheered the accession. He said it gives his country a say in some of the most pressing issues facing the world today, and enshrines democratic values and an “economy geared toward further prosperity.”/.
