The epicenter was in the town of Muccia in the Marche region. It hit at 05h11 (local time).

No injuries had been reported as of 09h00, however there was some damage to local buildings.

The mayor of Pieve Torina, also located close to the epicentre, said there had been "considerable further damage" in his town during a radio interview. The town closed schools for the day and evacuated four families from damaged buildings.

The quakes in August 2016, including one measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, came two months after a deadly quake killed some 300 to the South in Amatrice.

At least 230 of the victims were killed in Amatrice and 50 in the Arquata del Tronto area, while others died in Accumoli. The shock was the largest since 2009./
