Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to run for 5th term

The National Liberation Front in Angeria on April 8th announced incumbent President Abdelaziz Bouteflika as its candidate to run for his 5th consecutive term as President in 2019.

"FLN wants the President to continue his mission he started in 1999, as head of the state," said FLN Secretary General Djamel Ould Abbes, during a meeting with officials of his party in Algiers on April 7th.

Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, born in 1937, is an Algerian politician who has been the fifth President of Algeria since 1999. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1963 to 1979. As President, he presided over the end of the bloody Algerian Civil War in 2002.

In November 2012, he surpassed Mr. Houari Boumediene as the longest-serving President of Algeria.

The Constitution allows the current President to run for a new term of five years./.
