She received her certificate of office from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and took the oath in the German Parliament.

Merkel was voted in 364 to 315 by lawmakers, with nine abstentions, in favour of re-electing her.

At 171 days, the election marks the longest period in modern German history between a federal election and the election of a Chancellor.

"Welcome to the new government, but it was about time," German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said at a ceremony to swear Ms Merkel and other new ministers into office. "It's good that the time of uncertainty and doubt is over. It's good that the parties are ready and willing to form a government."

Angela Merkel, born in 1954, has served as Chancellor of Germany since 2005 and leader of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 2000. She has been widely described as the most powerful woman in the world, and the leader of the Free World./.
