The first explosion was triggered by a suicide bomber and was followed by a car bomb shortly after, said Interior Ministry Spokesman Najib Danish.

A car bomb exploded nearby after security forces and journalists gathered at the attack site. The Association of Afghan Journalists confirmed the death of a reporter and a cameraman. Both worked at the largest Afghan private channel Tolo News. Another television reporter suffered injuries. Civilians and members of the security forces also were among the dead and wounded.

The Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani, said in a statement: “An attack on civilians and media workers of the country is an attack on freedom of speech and a crime against humanity.”

In mid-August, at least 34 people were killed in a suicide attack in front of an education centre in Dasht-e-Barchi, west of Kabul.

“This latest cynical act of terror targeting ordinary citizens of Kabul, along with first responders and journalists, is deeply shocking,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan.

In a later statement, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, also condemned the attack and said via his Spokesman that "every effort should be made to bring to justice those who organized this attack against civilians."/.
