The announcement was made by Minister of International Development and La Francophonie of Canada Marie-Claude Bibeau at a meeting with Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who is on a visit to Canada from June 5th-9th.

Canada wants to help promote prosperity and benefits for the most vulnerable in Myanmar, especially women, poor farmers and young people, said Bibeau.

She added that the Canada’s support will help enhance the Myanmar government’s capacity to respond to natural disasters.

Previously, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged a peace and humanitarian aid worth CAD8.8 million (USD6 million) to the Southeast Asian country.

To date, Canada has provided over CAD95 million in official development assistance for Myanmar. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on effective development cooperation in February this year./.
