The center is located on the 6-hectare property where Hemingway lived in a tree-shaded, airy Spanish-style home.

The restoration center, which received financing from the Ford Foundation, American Express Philanthropy and the AT&T Foundation, among others, includes laboratories and an air-conditioned vault.

The Cuban National Cultural Heritage Council and Finca Vigia Foundation had previously signed three cooperation agreements to conserve and disseminate the legacy of Hemingway.

The center will restore and preserve thousands of documents and photographs, as well as the boat Hemingway was fond of.

When he died in 1961, the author left approximately 5,000 photos, 10,000 letters and perhaps thousands of margin notes in roughly 9,000 books at the property.

Hemingway, who won the Nobel prize in literature in 1954, wrote some of his best-known works during the 21 years he lived at Finca Vigia, or Lookout Farm, now a museum in San Francisco de Paula on the outskirts of Havana.

US Congressman Jim McGovern spoke at the opening ceremony that was attended by people of both countries. He expressed hope that Hemingway is again becoming a bridge between the two nations.

The two nations have restored diplomatic ties since 2015 after 54 years./.
