The events coincide with the first round of municipal elections in the country, which mark a significant turning point in Cuban history.

The most important commemoration was held at nightfall at Havana University, where Castro often delivered his lengthy and fiery speeches.

At the Havana University where Fidel Castro "became revolutionary," according to his own words, thousands of people attended a public gathering chaired by First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel and Jose Machado, second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba.

Several events, including vigils, are also planned in homage to Castro, who led the communist country from 1959 to 2008, after launching a revolution to overthrow US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Still, signs and slogans painted on walls that read "I am Fidel," "Fidel will always live" and "Fidel is among us" can be seen around the country. Cuba's two newspapers, the state-run Granma and Juventud Rebelde, dedicated most of their issues to the late communist leader.

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, a towering figure of the 20th century, passed away in Havana on November 25th, 2016 at the age of 90.

Born on August 13th, 1926, Fidel was a great revolutionist who named Cuba in the history of human-kind with a revolution overturning the dictatorial regime and led the Caribbean country to today’s independence.

As one of the leading world figures in the second half of the 20th century, Fidel Castro had outsized influence, given the size of his small Caribbean island./.
