Cuban commemorates late leader Fidel Castro

Thousands of Cubans on December 4th participated in a ceremony to pay tribute to their revolutionary father, Fidel Castro in Santiago de Cuba on the first anniversary of his death.

In a ceremony, President Raul Castro, accompanied by Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, laid a single white rose in front of the white granite boulder of his tomb.

The ceremonies wrapped up nine days of sober commemoration of the first anniversary of Castro’s death.

About 250,000 pupils, students and workers, many of them chanting "I am Fidel” marched from the centre of Santiago de Cuba to the eastern city's Santa Ifigenia Cemetery where Castro's ashes are interred.

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, a towering figure of the 20th century, passed away in Havana on November 25th, 2016 at the age of 90.

Born on August 13th, 1926, Fidel was a great revolutionist who inscribed Cuba's name in the history of human-kind with a revolution overturning the dictatorial regime and led the Caribbean country to its independence.

As one of the leading world figures in the second half of the 20th century, Fidel Castro had outsized influence, given the size of his small Caribbean island./.
