Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel visits Russia

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on November 1st arrived in Russia for talks expected to focus on expanding economic ties between the two nations.

The Cuban leader arrived at Vnukovo 2 Airport from France, the first stopover on an international tour that will also take him to China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Vietnam and Laos.

As part of his three-day state visit, Diaz-Canel is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on November 2nd.

The two leaders are expected to discuss the prospects of further deepening of the Russian-Cuban strategic partnership in several fields, and will exchange opinions about international and regional issues.

Cuban Foreign Ministry officials have said that in addition to meeting Mr. Putin, Mr. Diaz-Canel will also meet with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Putin visited Cuba in 2000 and 2014 as part of efforts to revive relations with the communist island nation.

Russian officials have recently signed contracts to modernize Cuban energy facilities and a metal factory. Russia and Cuba have also discussed expanding military ties./.
