The appointment filled the last spot in the centre-left government after months of wrangling over who would best maintain the country's tough stance on migration.

The nominee of the Social Democrats, 37, had formerly been a Deputy Foreign Minister.

President Zeman expressed hope that Mr. Petricek could contribute to foreign policy unity. "The Czech foreign policy has to be united in order to have any meaning," the President said at the ceremony.

The appointment of Petricek is the third personnel change since the appointment of Prime Minister Andrej Babis’ government in June. Former Justice Minister Tatana Mala and former Labor and Social Affairs Minister Petr Krcal stepped down in July./.
