Egypt President takes up AU Chairmanship

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has taken up the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) from Rwandan leader Paul Kagame, at the 32nd ordinary session of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 10th.

The Egyptian leader addressed the summit, saying he would focus on security on the African continent and rebuilding efforts of countries recovering from conflict.

"Our work must continue to improve peace and security in Africa in a holistic and sustainable manner," Mr. el- Sisi said. "Mediation and preventive diplomacy will remain one of the priorities of the African Union."

The post rotates annually between the five regions of the continent.

The AU General Assembly consists of 55 heads of state, and meets once a year at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Assembly is considered the AU’s supreme council as it establishes its priorities, adopts its annual program and monitors the implementation of its policies and decisions. /.
