The European Union (EU) and Cuba on May 15th signed a renewable energy deal worth EUR18 million in the framework of the EU-Cuba Joint Council in Brussels.

The signing of a EUR18 million project will support Cuba's goal of getting a quarter of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
In a general press conference with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini praised the first EU-Cuba Joint Council and said the signed project as an important step in relations between the EU and Cuba.
The EU also plans to finance a food security support program for the island with a contribution of EUR19.7 million.
The EU's 28 countries are the primary foreign investors in Cuba, mainly in the tourism and building sectors, the EU says.
Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla began a visit to Europe on May 14th.
On May 16th, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs will be in Geneva to present the National Report of Cuba to the third Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council.
On May 17th, Minister Parrilla will pay an official visit to Switzerland and carry out a number of activities./.
