European leaders congratulate Viktor Orban on election win

Central European leaders on April 9th congratulated Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban after he secured a “historic” victory for his ruling Fidesz Party in the national election.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will write to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to congratulate him on his election victory, the European Commission said.

"President Juncker will also call Prime Minister Orban to discuss issues of common interest," a spokesman for the EU executive told a regular press briefing.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis congratulated Orban on a "convincing" election victory, saying on Twitter he was looking forward to further cooperation.

In Berlin, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told reporters that Merkel had congratulated her Hungarian opposite number in writing. Australia's Chancellor Sebastian Kurz also sent a relatively generic message of congratulation to Mr. Orban.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wished Prime Minister Viktor Orban success. He wrote on Twitter that the “path of reform is never easy” but that “the support of the majority of society it is worth making this effort”.

Earlier, with more than 95.1% of votes counted, his Fidesz Party has won 48.86% of the vote, the National Election Office said, putting the 55-year-old Prime Minister on track for a third consecutive term in office.

Hungary's Nationalist Jobbik party came in a distant second with roughly 20 percent of the vote and the Socialist Party received 12%. Two other parties, the Democratic Coalition and the green Politics Can Be Different, are expected to surpass the 5% threshold and will join the legislative body.

The Parliamentary elections in Hungary were closely monitored across Europe. Final election results are expected by April 27th./.
