Ex-president Rajoelina wins Madagascar vote

Madagascar’s Independent National Election Commission (INEC) on December 27th announced the victory of former President Andry Rajoelina in the second round of the Presidential election.

Accordingly, Mr. Rajoelina, 44, won some 55.66 percent of the votes while his sole rival in the race, Marc Ravalomanana, got about 44.34 percent votes.

During the first round of the election, Mr Rajoelina took 39% of the vote and Mr Ravalomanana 35%.

Both candidates had promised to boost the economy in a country where 75% of the population live in poverty.

The president of the INEC Hery Rakotomanana said there are more than 9,900,000 registered voters and the participation rate in the second round of election stood at about 48%.

The Indian Ocean island nation's constitutional court has nine days to declare the final election results. All votes have been counted./.
