The NPC is the national legislature of the People’s Republic of China. Major state positions will be elected in this session.

President Xi Jingping and other Chinese leaders attended the opening meeting, at which Premier Li Keqiang is delivering a government work report.

The Congress will consider in this session the proposal made by the Communist Party of China to amend the Constitution, for the first time since 2004.

This year’s meetings are considered to be extremely important: NPC will elect new government leaders and officials including the president and premier for the coming five years; China’s Central Bank’s Governor will be appointed as well; and economic targets for 2018 will be released.

Besides, issues such as anti-corruption model, new growth target, poverty alleviation and national defence will be also discussed. The annual budget was also released.

According to the work report, China’s GDP growth target in 2018 is likely to be about 6.5% this year, the same as in 2017.

The event is set to last for 15 and one-half days.

The session will conclude on March 20th./.
