Nauseda, born in 1964, gained 72 percent of the vote, according to election authority results after 42 percent of the ballots were counted. Mr. Ingrida Simonyte, 44, a former finance minister in a center-right government, stood at 28 percent.

“I was the independent candidate and my task in this election campaign was to unify Lithuanian people, no matter where they live, in small regions, villages, small cities or big cities,” Mr. Gitanas Nauseda said after declaring victory.

“I am grateful to the people who voted today and I can promise that politics will be different now in Lithuania. Everybody deserves a better life in our beautiful country,” Nauseda told a cheering crowd of supporters.

Mr. Nauseda has no affiliation with any party. With little experience in politics, his campaign was focused on emphasizing his independence, suggesting he can cooperate with all parties in government.

The President’s main task is to oversee Lithuania’s foreign and security policy, including acting as the supreme commander of the armed forces./.
