India, Laos chart course for stronger ties

Laos and India charted a roadmap to ratchet up their ties and cooperation in the future at the ninth meeting of their joint committee in Vientiane, Laos, on November 23rd.

The meeting was co-chaired by Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj.

The meeting reviewed comprehensively the bilateral relations as well as the operating cooperative programmes between the two countries.

Before attending the meeting, Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj was received by Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.

Swaraj stated that India will support Laos during its development cause and is willing to come up with preferential lending projects for Laos to develop infrastructure, agriculture, irrigation, information technology, human resources, and other sectors.

Laos is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India is working to get the country involved in its Act East policy.

Sushma Swaraj and her entourage are in a three-day official visit to Laos from November 22nd./.
