Nearly 100 rescue workers rushed to the site to cut open the mangled coaches near the Kuneru railway station in the Vizianagram district of Andhra Pradesh state.

“The death toll has gone up to 39”, said J.P. Mishra, a spokesman for East Coast Railways. He said there were around 600 people in the derailed carriages.

Chief ministers of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh expressed their grief over the latest tragedy, while Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said he was rushing to the site.

Prabhu announced compensation of 200,000 rupees (USD2,936) for the relatives of the dead and 50,000 rupees for those injured.

This accident comes only two months after nearly 150 people were killed in a similar disaster, highlighting the malaise on a network which is one of the world's largest./.
