The international community has confirmed the importance of universal health coverage (UHC) financing in developing countries. At the G20 in Osaka in June 2019, leaders affirmed the G20 Shared Understanding on the Importance of UHC Financing in Developing Countries.
Finance ministers and health ministers had a joint session on the occasion of the Osaka summit. The importance of UHC financing was reaffirmed at the United Nations’ High-Level meeting on UHC on September 23rd 2019 in New York.
The G20 Shared Understanding document places particular emphasis on the importance of collaboration between finance and health authorities. To keep the momentum, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Health Organization, and the Government of Japan plan to coorganize a ministerial-level symposium on May 3rd 2020, at the time of the 53rd Annual Meeting of ADB’s Board of Governors in Incheon, Republic of Korea.
In this symposium, finance and health ministers from the Asia and Pacific region will meet to discuss how to strengthen UHC in the region and promote further cooperation between the finance and health ministers in this area. The symposium will be an opportunity for key stakeholders, including representatives of international organizations and civil society to share experience in promoting UHC in this region./.
