Iraq elects new President and Prime Minister

Iraq’s Parliament on October 2nd elected veteran politician Barham Salih as the new President of the country.

Mr. Barham Salih, won 220 votes out of the 273 lawmakers who attended the session. He was among 20 candidates for the post.

Mr. Salih is a former Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and a former Deputy Prime Minister of the Iraqi Federal Government.

Newly elected Iraqi President Salih has named veteran Shiite politician Adel Abdul Mahdi as Prime Minister-designate, and tasked him with forming a new Government.

The new Prime Minister had previously served as Vice President, Finance Minister and Oil Minister under outgoing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

The US Ambassador to Iraq, Douglas Silliman, congratulated Mr. Abdul Mahdi on his nomination on Twitter: “The US will work with the future Prime Minister to help his government meet the needs and aspirations of all the people of Iraq.”

The new President will have 15 days to task the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc with forming a new government. The Prime Minister-designate will then have 30 days to submit his cabinet to Parliament./.
