Ivan Duque sworn in as Colombia’s next President

Colombia’s President-elect Ivan Duque was sworn on August 7th in as the country’s President, succeeding Juan Manuel Santos, who had been in power since 2010.

In the presence of local politicians and representatives of 17 countries, Duque took the oath at the Bolivar Square in central Bogota.

More than 12,000 police were deployed in the Duque's inauguration.

"I swear by God and before the Colombian people to defend the Constitution and the laws of Colombia," said Ivan Duque.

Ivan Duque, 42, who formerly served as a senator, was the presidential candidate for the Democratic Centre Party for the election in 2018. He defeated Gustavo Petro, in a presidential run-off in June with 54 percent votes.

Marta Lucia Ramirez was also sworn in as the South American country’s first female Vice President./.
