The first explosion struck outside a mosque in the eastern city of Benghazi, in the central Al Salmani district, at around 8.20pm as worshippers were leaving evening prayers.

A second car exploded 30 minutes later in the same area, causing more casualties among security services and civilians.

Libya has been rocked by chaos since the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed dictator Muammar Gaddafi, with two rival authorities and multiple militias vying for control of the oil-rich country.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings.

The UN condemned the attack on social media, saying that direct or indiscriminate attacks on civilians are prohibited under international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes./.
