Michael Bloomberg appointed as envoy for climate action

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on March 5th appointed former New York mayor and billionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg as UN special envoy for climate action.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres said Mr. Bloomberg will support a planned UN Climate Summit next year to mobilize more ambitious action to implement the landmark 2015 Paris climate agreement aimed at curbing production of greenhouse gases.

Mr. Michael Bloomberg, said that President Donald Trump can become "a great leader" if he changes his mind about global warming and keeps the US in the Paris climate agreement.

He expressed hope that Trump will listen to his advisers, look at the data on climate change, and support the 2015 Paris accord aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Michael Bloomberg spoke during a ceremony at which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres gave him the new title of UN special envoy for climate action, handing him the job of spurring international action to help curb global warming.

Bloomberg is the founder, CEO, and owner of Bloomberg L.P., a global financial services, mass media, and software company that bears his name, and is notable for its Bloomberg Terminal, a computer software system providing financial data widely used in the global financial services industry. 

Mr. Bloomberg served as the 108th Mayor of New York city, holding office for three consecutive terms, beginning with his first election in 2001.

Mr. Michael Bloomberg was frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for the US Presidential elections in 2008, and 2012, as well as for Governor of New York in 2010. He declined to seek either office, opting to continue serving as the Mayor of New York city./.
