Earlier this week, Shtayyeh’s candidacy was approved by the Fatah central committee, local media reported.

Mr. Mohammed Shtayyah will replace former PM Rami Hamdallah, who had been PM since 2014.

Speaking to Palestine Television, Mr. Shtayyeh said he would immediately begin consultations with factions belonging to the Palestine Liberation Organization, which Abbas heads, on forming a new cabinet.

According to law, Shtayeh has three weeks to form a new government. The deadline, however, can be extended by two more weeks if necessary.

Mr. Mohammed Shtayyah, born in 1958, is an economic expert who served as minister of public works and housing, and minister of the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction, and holds a doctorate in economic development from the University of Sussex. He worked as a professor and dean at Birzeit University and has published several books on economics, politics and history./.
