The heatwave has coincided with power outages and the holy month of Ramadan, when most Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours.

The city of Karachi, with a population of 15 million, is sweltering in temperatures hitting 44°C.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department warned the extreme heat would continue throughout the week, forecasting daytime temperatures of between 40-43°C.

"Considering the ongoing observance of Ramadan and people fasting, authorities have to ensure adequate supply of power and water," the Department said in a statement.

Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar urged residents to stay indoors to avoid heatstroke.

In April 2017, a severe heat wave with temperatures as high as 51°C hit Pakistan, especially its Southern parts. it broke temperature records in many cities in the country for the month of April. Larkana, a city in the Southern province of Sindh, experienced the highest maximum temperature of 51.0°C on April 20th, breaking the previous day's record of 50°C./.
