Mr. Magabe, 93, was until his resignation the world’s oldest leader. He had previously refused to quit despite last week’s military takeover and days of protests.

Mugabe led Zimbabwe's fight for independence in the 1970s.

He came to power in 1980 and his 37-year rule was criticised for repression of dissent, election rigging, and for causing the country's economic collapse.

"My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe, and my desire for a smooth, non-violent transfer of power," said Mr Mugabe in the letter read out in Parliament.

His resignation brings to an end the political impasse in that country faced since last week when the Army took charge of its government.

Mr. Mugabe had initially refused to resign, insisting he would hold on to power.

In the streets outside, crowds erupted in rapturous celebrations, dancing and cheering in joy, raising their fists and waving Zimbabwean flags.

The US Embassy in Zimbabwe said it was "an historic moment" for the country and congratulated all Zimbabweans who raised their voices./.
