RoK President names SMEs and start-ups Minister

The Republic of Korea (RoK)’s President Moon Jae-in on October 23rd named former lawmaker of the Democratic Party and liberal economist Hong Jong-haak as Minister of SMEs (small-and medium-sized businesses) and Start-ups.

The 58-year old served as a policy adviser in Moon's election campaign. He is currently a emeritus professor at Gachon University in Seongnam, located some 40 kilometers south of Seoul.

Mr. Hong, if appointed, will be the first minister of the new Government office, created after President Moon took office in May.

A former student activist, human rights lawyer, and chief presidential secretary to then-President Roh Moo-hyun, Moon once served as leader of Minjoo Party of Korea (2015- 2016) and a member of the 19th National Assembly (2012- 2016). He was also a candidate of the former Democratic United Party in the 2012 presidential election in which he lost narrowly to Park Geun-hye./.
