The Republic of Korea (RoK)’s President Moon Jae-in on January 8th replaced his Chief of Staff and two other senior secretaries to aim at raising approval ratings amid economic woes and spy scandal.

Accordingly, he named Noh Young-min, currently the Ambassador to China, as his new Chief of Staff.

Besides, President Moon Jae-in also named Mr. Kang Ki-jeong, 55, as the top Presidential Secretary for political affairs, while Yoon Do-han, a journalist from local broadcaster MBC, was named as the new Senior Secretary for Public Relations.

The reshuffle comes as Mr. Moon will soon begin his third year in office since coming to power in May 2017. It is seen as aimed at revitalizing momentum for an administration facing faltering approval ratings and the spying scandal, which have both eroded Moon’s popularity and undermined his reform drive.

“The slowing economy is the biggest reason for his falling approval ratings. It will be hard for Mr. Moon to reverse the slide in his popularity unless the economy improves,” said Shin Yul, a professor of politics at Myongji University in Seoul./.
