Russia’s Election Commission accepts Putin’s documents as presidential candidate

On December 28th, Russia’s central election commission (CEC) accepted documents from Vladimir Putin to register him as a candidate in next March’s presidential ballot.

The documents were accepted by members of the CEC's working group. The sides later signed a protocol on accepting the documents.

"All the submitted documents are subject to compulsory checks into their compliance with the law for a maximum of five days. Fourteen inquiries will be sent to 12 agencies as part of the checks," the CEC press service said.

The ruling United Russia party and the Just Russia party have both said they will support him.

Earlier, incumbent President Putin said he would seek re-election as an independent candidate.

The upcoming election will be the fourth in Putin’s political career. He has been in power since 2000, either as President or Prime Minister. If he wins the March election, he will be eligible to serve until 2024.

The election was previously planned to be held on March 11th, but was postponed to March 18th./.
