He took over from Guinea's President Alpha Conde, who was elected to chair the 55-member Union at the 28th AU summit in January 2017.

The assembly of AU heads of state elects the chair of the AU for a one year-term, and the chairmanship rotates among the five sub-regions of the continent.

Mr. Kagame called on African countries to work in unity, create a single continental market, integrate their infrastructure and infuse their economies with technology.

“Thank you for your double trust; first as the leader of the reform process, now as the chairperson of our union.”

"I promise to do the best job I can. But I will need your full support,” he said.

Earlier, he met with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on January 26th, where they discussed the strengthening of US-Africa relations as he assumes the leadership of the AU./.
