His re-election comes just days after Mr. Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner, the Komeito Party, won a decisive victory in a parliamentary election, maintaining its two-thirds majority in the Diet. He is expected to retain his current cabinet ministers.

Abe, as leader of the LDP, has now been re-elected for a third consecutive term since he took office in December 2012.

If he is re-elected as the President of the LDP in 2018 and remains in power until November 2019, Abe will become Japan’s longest-serving PM.

Earlier, PM Abe accepted the resignation of the Cabinet, and after the re-election, Abe is expected to announce the new government without reshuffles./.
