The appointment aims to fill a key post regarding the Korean Peninsula, so as to facilitate issues like bilateral negotiations over denuclearization, peace regime and economic sanctions, among others.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “As the special representative, Steve will lead negotiations and spearhead diplomatic efforts with our allies and partners," and noted that "using diplomacy to resolve the DPRK security threat once and for all remains one of President Trump's greatest priorities, and Steve is eminently qualified for the task and clear-eyed in the challenge before us."

Mr. Pompeo said he would visit the DPRK again next week to try to persuade it to abandon its nuclear weapons, and will take the new U.S. special representative, Stephen Biegun, with him in an attempt to break the deadlock.

It will be Pompeo’s fourth trip this year aimed at getting the DPRK to scrap a nuclear weapons program that threatens the US, and his second since an unprecedented June summit between US President Donald Trump and DPRK's leader Kim Jong-un./.
