The 48-year-old Sultan Muhammad V had been elected to take over from Kedah's Sultan Abdul Halim by the Conference of Rulers at its 243rd meeting in October. He took his oath of office on December 13th last year.

Malaysia is one of 43 countries in the world that practice constitutional monarchy, with its rotational system of selecting a king  being the only one of its kind in the world.

The new king's installation came as Malaysia is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its independence.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Najib Razak read out a declaration, saying the installation represented the continuation of monarchy in Malaysia./.
