The President met with Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahceli on April 18th to discuss his surprise proposal to hold early presidential and parliamentary elections on August 26th, this summer, not in 2019 as they were scheduled to take place.

“As a result of consultations with Mr. Bahcili, we decided to hold elections on June 24th, 2018, a Sunday,” said President Erdogan.

The winner will assume the Presidency of the Turkish republic with broad powers that were approved after a constitutional referendum last year. The elections are likely to take place under a state of emergency that has been in place since a coup attempt in July 2016.

Presidential elections will be held to elect the President of Turkey using a two-round system, with the first round taking place on June 24th and a second round (if necessary) due to occur two weeks after on  July 8th. Parliamentary elections will also take place to elect 600 Members of Parliament to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey./.
