Hyundai Group and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s Asia-Pacific Peace Committee held a joint event on November 18th to mark the 20th anniversary of the inter-Korean tourism program at the Mount Geumgang.

The event was attended by the Republic of Korea (RoK) representative, including about 30 members of Hyundai Group and its Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, six incumbent lawmakers, former government officials, private experts, business executives and journalists.

The tour to Mount Geumgang was launched in November 1998 by Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung, the late father- in-law of the current Hyundai Chairwoman.

It was a key symbol of reconciliation between the two Koreas, which technically remain at war as the 1950-53 war ended only with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

The Hyundai Group has been hosting the celebration of the tours almost every year since 1999, though 2003 was the first year it hosted the event with the DPRK. The celebration stopped in 2015 when bilateral relations worsened after an incident in the demilitarized zone that August.

After the Pyongyang summit in September, RoK’s President Moon Jae-in and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un agreed to resume the Mount Geumgang tour and the inter-Korean industrial complex in the DPRK’s border town of Kaesong./.
