The DPRK has made a lot of progress on the humanitarian front since 2012, although challenges remain regarding child malnutrition as well as the lack of safe water and medical supplies, said Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordination, Mark Lowcock on July 11th.

There is very “clear evidence” of humanitarian need in the DPRK, the top U.N. aid official said during his official visit to the DPRK capital of Pyongyang on July 9th.

More than half of children in rural areas have no clean water, and about 20 per cent of the children in the country have malnutrition, he added.

The U.N. is trying to raise USD110 million to meet health, water and sanitation and food security needs for about 6 million people in the DPRK. Only 10 percent has been raised so far, Lowrock said, through donations from the Swedish, Swiss and Canadian governments./.
