Mr. Kenyatta took the oath which was administered by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Anne Amadi, pledging to uphold the Constitution and rule justly.

President Kenyatta, speaking to a cheering crowd of tens of thousands in Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium, called the past few months “a trying time” for Kenya, and he urged an end to divisiveness and hate.

Mr. Kenyatta was re-elected with just over 54 percent of the vote, easily surpassing the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a run-off, according to an announcement from the IEBC. Mr. Odinga, 72, the opposition leader, received 44.7 percent of the vote.

Uhuru Kenyatta became the fourth President of Kenya in 2013. Age 56, he is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first President, and his fourth wife Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

Deputy President William Ruto also took oath of office at Kasarani Stadium to begin their second term in government.

President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto took the oaths of office in front of some 13 mostly African heads of state, including from South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and Somalia./.
