UN Chief Antonio Guterres visits India

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on October 1st arrived in New Delhi to start his maiden visit to India as the head of the world body.

The visit coincides with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule.

As scheduled, Mr. Guterres will meet President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. 

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also deliver a lecture at the India Habitat Centre, on the theme “Global challenges, Global solutions”.

India is an "important partner" of the UN in countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism, UN Secretary-General had said, and there are plans to step up cooperation between the two on strengthening capacity in combating terror financing.

The visit will last for three days./.
