US ambassador to Korea to sworn in on July 7th

New US ambassador to the Republic of Korea (RoK) Harry Harris will take up the post on July 7th.

The US Senate unanimously approved the nomination of US Navy Admiral Harry Harris to serve in the role.

Harris will fill a slot US Ambassador to the RoK Mark Lippert vacated in January 2017.

Mr. Harris, born in 1956, was the first Asian American to achieve the rank of admiral in the US Navy, and the highest-ranking Japanese American currently in the US military.

Admiral Harris currently commands the US Pacific Command (USPACOM). Prior to USPACOM, he commanded the US Pacific Fleet.  

From 2011 to 2013, Admiral Harris served as the representative of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the Secretary of State. In this role, he traveled to over 80 countries with the Secretary and participated in most of the Secretary’s meetings with foreign leaders. He also served as the US Roadmap Monitor for the Mid-East Peace Process./.
