Pelosi’s nomination was made at a closed door meeting by a 203-32 vote, according to attendees in the room. Three ballots were blank. One member was absent.

If approved by the full House, Ms. Pelosi still needs to win a majority in a roll call vote on the House floor on January 3rd, 2019 when her party will take control of the chamber for the first time in eight years.

“I’m proud to be the nominee of the House Democratic caucus once again for Speaker of the House,” said Ms. Pelosi.

Democrats will control 234 of the 435 seats in the next Congress.

Nancy Pelosy, 78, is currently serving as the Minority Leader of the US House of Representatives since 2011, representing California's 12th congressional district. She previously served as the 52nd Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011, the only woman to do so. Her ascent to House Speaker also made her the highest-ranking female politician in the US history./.
