US Secretary of State meets Japanese counterpart ahead of G7

On June 6th, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono who is paying a visit to the country.

Mr. Taro Kono met with Mr. Pompeo for about 25 minutes in Washington.

During the meeting, Mr. Kono was informed about the ongoing negotiations with Pyongyang ahead of the first-ever meeting between US President Donald Trump and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s leader Kim Jong-un, which is scheduled for June 12th in Singapore.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, the second meeting between the two leaders in less than two months, to reaffirm the importance of urging the DPRK to abandon all nuclear weapons and missile programs, before travelling to Quebec in Canada to attend the G7 summit on June 8th – 9th.

"Ahead of this historic U.S.-DPRK summit, I will meet President Trump to coordinate in order to advance progress on the nuclear issue, missiles, and, most importantly, the abductees issue," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said.
