Venezuela invites Caricom to elections April 22nd

The Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) on February 22nd sent an invitation to the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to attend the next presidential elections in the country as an international electoral accompanier.

Earlier, Venezula also invited the United Nations to send an observer team to oversee its presidential elections.

A formal invitation was delivered to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, president of the NEC, Tibisay Lucena, said.

According to Ms. Lucena, the participation of the UN would demonstrate the legitimacy of the Venezuelan electoral system.

Socialist President Nicolas Maduro has already launched his campaign for a second term and currently stands as the only candidate.

Mr Maduro has ruled Venezuela since April 2013 following the death of Hugo Chavez, his mentor and the father of the country’s left wing revolution.

Maduro says that in his second term he’ll wean Venezuela’s economy off of oil production.

Nicolas Maduro, born in 1962, previously served under President Hugo Chavez as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2013, and as Vice President of Venezuela from 2012 to 2013./.
