Maduro succeeded leftist icon Hugo Chavez after his death in 2013.

"We already have 18 Governorates. We already have the majority of the mayors. We have the National Constituent Assembly, and we will have, God willing, people willing, the re-election of our brother Nicolas Maduro as president of the Republic," said El Aissami in a rally with militants of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

The announcement comes as the South American country is suffering shortages of food and medicine and hyper-inflation after a fall in the price of crude oil.

Nicolas Maduro, born in 1962, has been President of Venezuela since 2013. Previously he served under President Hugo Chavez as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2013, and as Vice President of Venezuela from 2012 to 2013./.
