Socialist President Nicolas Maduro has already launched his campaign for a second term and currently stands as the only candidate, as Venezuela continues to sink deeper into an economic crisis of high inflation and food shortages.

Mr Maduro has ruled Venezuela since April 2013 following the death of Hugo Chavez, his mentor and the father of the country’s left wing revolution.

Maduro says that in his second term he’ll wean Venezuela’s economy off of oil production.

Nicolas Maduro, born in 1962, has been President of Venezuela since 2013. Previously he served under President Hugo Chavez as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2013, and as Vice President of Venezuela from 2012 to 2013./.
