He made the announcement at a meeting with workers of the GAZ factory in the city of Nizny Novgorod on December 6th.

“I will put forward my candidacy for the post of president of the Russian Federation,” said Putin during a meeting with factory workers.

“Russia will continue moving forward, and nobody will ever be able to stop this forward movement,” he said.

Mr. Putin’s approval ratings top 80 percent, making him certain to win an easy first-round victory in the March 18th vote.

Earlier in the day, the President attended the Russian Volunteer 2017 award ceremony in Moscow, where he asked the audience whether they would support his decision to run. The answer was seemingly a unanimous "Yes."

The upcoming election on March 18th will be the fourth in Putin’s political career. Mr. Putin has been in power since 2000, either as President or Prime Minister. If he wins the March election he will be eligible to serve until 2024./.
