Mr. Sharif, 67, had to step down as the chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) after he was disqualified as the Prime Minister by the Supreme Court on July 28th in the Panama Papers scandal.

The intra-party election is being held after the National Assembly passed the Elections Bill 2017, paving way for former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to regain chairmanship of the ruling party.“We feel very strongly Nawaz Sharif has to lead our party. He’s the symbol of unity in our party,” said Rana Afzal Khan, a PML-N lawmaker.

“Nawaz Sharif is the symbol of economic development in Pakistan,” Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal said in his address to party members.

The Election Bill 2017, commonly known as Electoral Reforms Bill, was approved by the Senate and subsequently signed into law by the President on Monday (October 2nd)./.
