Paul Ryan wins re-election as speaker of U.S. House of Representatives

On January 3rd, U.S. Representative Paul Ryan was re-elected speaker of the House of Representatives by the 115th Congress on Capitol Hill.

Ryan, 47, was elected with 239 votes. He will serve his first full term as speaker, after succeeding John Boehner in October 2015.

"Honoured to be elected speaker of the House for the 115th Congress," Ryan tweeted moments after the roll call result was announced.

Ryan is a member of the Republican Party who has served as the U.S. Representative for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district since 1999. Ryan previously served as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, from January 3rd to October 29th, 2015, and, before that, as Chairman of the House Budget Committee from 2011 to 2015.

He was the Republican Party nominee for Vice President of the United States, running alongside former Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts in the 2012 election. Ryan, together with Democratic Senator Patty Murray, negotiated the landmark Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013./.
