RoK’s President appoints new Justice Minister

The Republic of Korea (RoK)’s President Moon Jae-in on June 27th appointed Mr. Park Sang-ki, 64, a professor at Yonsei University’s law school, as the new Justice Minister.

Mr. Park Sang-ki serves as a co-chair of the non-governmental organization Citizens’ Coalition for Economic Justice. Park, who holds a doctorate in criminal law from the University of Gottingen in Germany, has also served as the head of the Korean Institute of Criminology.

President Moon had initially nominated Ahn Kyong-whan, a professor emeritus of Seoul National University, for the post. However, Ahn withdrew from consideration after past wrongdoings were revealed.

The Blue House also appointed Mr. Pak Un-jong, a professor of law at Seoul National University (SNU), as the new head of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, and Lee Jin-gyu, a career bureaucrat, as the first Vice Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

President Moon also appointed Shin Hyun-soo, a former career prosecutor, as Executive Director of the National Intelligence Service (NIS)./.
